What makes for a good scar?

This is a very long topic but we'll do our best to summarize here.

The appearance of a scar can be influenced by several factors, some of which are inherent to the patient and other that we can control.

Factors within our control are:

  1. Pre-surgical nutrition status
  2. Incision placement and direction
  3. Closure technique
  4. Post-surgical wound care for up to 2 years

Factors outside of our control:

  1. Age
  2. Skin laxity
  3. Genetics

Being proactive about scar appearance has a major impact on the outcome. And while there are steps that can be taken to improve the appearance of scars, it's important to recognize that scars are a natural part of the healing process and may never completely disappear. Acceptance and self-care can also play a significant role in how individuals perceive their scars.
